Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

End of July I went to the Lunceford family reunion and took the time to go visit the asylum, which is owned by one of my relatives (Joe Jordan).  Unfortunately I didn’t have the right lens with me for indoor shooting but here are a few images

  1. The official website is http://www.talawv.com

  2. Wikipedia site has a nice short historical write up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Allegheny_Lunatic_Asylum.  Want to know more such as the details of the gold robbery, take the tour :-)

  3. It was the WVA asylum from about the time of the second great war of rebellion until the mid 90’s when a new facility was built

  4. It is the second largest cut stone building in the world, the largest being the Kremlin

  5. Ghost Hunters  (SyFy channel) has been there twice as has Ghost Adventures (Travel Channel).  Ghost Hunters Celebrity will be there Aug 27 and 28, 2010

  6. Besides the asylum, they also have periodic side by side sand racing and a mud bog.  Large horsepower engines on vehicles with big wheels.  Somehow that seems to fit being on the same grounds as the asylum :-)

  7. People come from all over the world to visit the asylum, some take a tour, some pay to spend the night looking for ghosts

  8.   It’s not all open to the public yet, but they are working on it, if you like a combination of interesting history along with interesting buildings, whether you are into ghosts or not, it’s a great photo opportunity.   See their website for details.

The Main Building

The town of Weston, WV.  The asylum is the white clock tower left center.
