Eagles in the Wild

Oatmeal, Texas - April 2005

Photos taken between Oatmeal and Bertram, TX

This was my second attempt at talking eagle photos from a long way (at least 100 yards).  These photos are a long way from quality shots, they are much better than my first attempt.

Few American Eagle facts:
  • They mate for life

  • They usually return to the same nest every year

  • In this case there were three adults (two females, one male).  Probably the second female lost a mate and had 'joined' this family.  They had two eaglets this year.

  • It will be four or five years before the young eagles develop the white head feathers

  • They can fly 20-40 mph, dive at 100 mph and can swim (they use an overhand stroke similar to a butterfly stroke)

  • They usually nest close to water and have a diet of fish, water birds and turtles

And: The term Bald Eagle comes from the Old English term balde, which means white, not because they look bald!
