Type: Burr Arch

Date visited: Aug 99

Length: ~290 Feet

Details: Located on the Tygart Valley River, it is the only two lane bridge still in service in the US. A major passageway for both the North and South during the War Between The States (often reported as the location of the first land battle of the War Between The States). Served as a roadway between Virginia and West Virginia. As with most wooden bridges, it's had good days and bad. It was severly burned in 1989 when a gasoline truck refueling a service station sprung a leak, allowing gas to flow down the hill to the bridge. The bridge now sports internal lighting and a sprinkler system.
Directions: From I79 Exit 121 (Route 50), travel approx. 15 miles to Grafton. Pick up US250 south to the town of Philippi. The bridge is on US219 at the US250 intersection.
